Overview

Reflux is usually diagnosed on symptoms and treated with meal timing, trigger reduction and acid-suppressing medication. Endoscopy is reserved for alarm features or symptoms that do not respond.

  • Burning behind the breastbone
  • Sour taste or regurgitation
  • Chronic cough or hoarseness
  • Worse after meals or lying down

When to seek care

  • Trouble swallowing
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Vomiting blood or black stools (seek urgent care)
  • Symptoms lasting past 8 weeks of treatment
