Knee pain is evaluated by how it started, where it hurts, and whether the joint swells, catches or gives way. Treatment ranges from strengthening and bracing to injections and, for advanced arthritis or a torn ligament, surgery.

  • Swelling or stiffness
  • Pain on stairs or when standing up
  • Clicking, catching or locking
  • Instability or giving way

When to seek care

  • The knee cannot bear weight
  • Rapid swelling after an injury
  • Pain that limits walking for more than 2 weeks

Do I need an MRI for knee pain?
Not usually at the first visit. X-rays show arthritis and alignment; MRI is added when a ligament or cartilage tear is suspected.
